Trout

We are still feeling the effects from last week's blow but the waters are clearing up and fishing has greatly improved with the cleaner waters.  Today, Gene and Anna from South Bend, Ind. caught their limit of some nice trout.  Everglades fishing was good today and the weather cooperated.  We had some bad weather in Everglades City but 20 miles south the weather was good.  There are some Everglades snook in the backcountry if you are willing to cast with artificial lures.  Ratlin rouges and gray jigs worked good.    There are also keeper sized mangrove snappers there and can be caught on a piece of shrimp.  Everglades fishing will be better and better from now on.  This Everglades fishing charters was happy.

Everglades Fishing

No Everglades fishing today. The wind is howling and the rain is here and there. This Everglades fishing guide will stay in port and get ready for tomorrow. Time to change lines, put leaders and hooks on and WD40 everything. Yesterday was extremely slow but some fish were caught in the backcountry. We scraped together 8 Everglades snook, 9 redfish and some small trout. The 35mph winds blew the tides in and made muddy waters. This Everglades fishing charters had a hard day.

Hooksets are Important

For those who haven't experienced a hard fighting Everglades snook now is the time to get one.  And, if you are going to get one hooksets are important.  Everglades fishing requires the proper hookset in order to fight and catch those fish.  A "bass" hookset is where you set the hook so hard that you literally rip the lips off of an everglades snook or redfish.  And, if you do that to a trout you get the head only.  Everglades fishing requires concentration and when that fish strikes a solid hookset is important.  When the fish strikes set the hook as if you are popping a cork.  That is all it takes.  For a large everglades tarpon it requires some finess.  When the tarpon strikes and is in the water "jab" the fish 4 or 5 times and the fish will jump, bow to the fish, and when it returns to the water "jab" it again and you should have a hookset.  For other species one hookset is usually enough.  When I am on an Everglades fishing charter I provide some instructions to those that need it and those that think they don't.  Being an Everglades fishing guide requires me to also be an instructor as well as a fisherman.   Pictured above is a tarpon we caught today while on the grassflats.  The fish was caught with a Rip Tide gray smokey shrimptail.  The hookset was extremely important and was done correctly.  Tom, ILL.,  used a baitcaster spooled with 15lb mono.  The fish was estimated at 75lbs.

Everglades Snook Fishing

Today was a tough day for everglades fishing.  Snook were hard to find but there were some in the backcountry.  Canon Bay and Alligator Bay were home to some well over 30 inches and there was one in Alligator Bay that would have reached 40 inches if my party would have landed him.  Lots of bull sharks back there.  We also fished the Rabbit Key grasses later this afternoon and found some keeper snook on the out islands.  This everglades fishing guide earned his pay today.

Trout

An east wind blowing steadily at 20 knots, low tide waters (even at high tide), and 4 novice anglers proved to be a challenge for this Everglades fishing guide.  But, the trout cooperated today at just a few choice locations.  Pictured above are two trout, one at 21 inches, and the other at 24 inches were caught by Phil, Quincy, ILL., on a white 1/4 oz. buck tail jig with pink head.  These fish were caught on the grass flats, very near shore by Lostmans River.  Everglades fishing was challenging today but for Phil and company trout was the ticket.  It made for a happy Everglades fishing charters.

Everglades Fishing for Trout Today

Kevin, Christy, Jimmy, and Brian, teenagers from Miami, caught trout today.  They came home with a nice mess of trout from the grass flats of the Everglades National Park.  The fish were caught using a red 1/4 ounce jig and a gray or new penny Rip Tide soft plastic tail.  Although it was the first day of snook season 4 teen anglers in a 20 ft. flats boat would be difficult for them and trout was fine.  This Everglades fishing charter was a success.
